Become a HHDNYC Volunteer
HHDNYC will train Volunteers to assist disabled persons.
HHDNYC takes action to serve real needs. If a person calls and says they don't have a coat and are freezing, HHDNYC gets them a coat. Right away.
HHDNYC Volunteers serve disabled persons with a variety of tasks or errands.
Here are a few examples of needs
that our volunteers regularly meet:
• Helping disabled members to move from shelters
or nursing homes into other accommodations
• Helping people to get clothing, or to choose shoes,
or to shop
• Take people to the doctor or accompany them
on their way to or from surgery
• If a person goes to the hospital, HHDNYC will care for,
or board their service animal
Choose from these
very important commitments:
Be a Buddy
Buddies work for a specific person 3 hours per week. Buddies assist with shopping, errands,
and other practical needs.
• Shopping
• Errands
• Accompany to Appointments or Events
• Assist with Paperwork
• Go to inaccessible websites and fill out forms
Volunteer from Home
HHDNYC needs phone volunteers to work from home. Disabled persons are encouraged to volunteer.
• Answer calls to the Action Line and route requests
to volunteers.
• Clerical assistance is needed to answer emails, write
letters and solicit donations.
• People with artistic abilities are needed to create
marketing materials or decorative donation buckets.
Food Pantry Worker
Serve disabled adults by delivering emergency food
to members. Food Pantry Workers are needed to buy food and stock the pantry, to assist members, or to deliver emergency supplies to persons who need deliveries.
Drivers! Drivers! Drivers!
Simple assistance that is always of the highest demand is to be a driver. Disabled people need help to get to and from places and keep appointments. Drivers with patience, discipline and commitment are always needed to show up at the right place at the right time, ready to go!
• Volunteer Drivers are needed in all five boroughs
of New York City
Event Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to assist with social events
and trips.
• Help members to get on or off
Access-A-Ride (a NYC service)
• Serve food to members
• People who can donate cooked food
• People who can entertain
HHDNYC organizes two monthly events:
Monthly Social Event – an opportunity for members to join with people to enjoy a meal and talk with interesting people.
A Monthly Trip to Places of Interest – Trips vary each month. Trips may be to a Restaurant, the Zoo, a Museums, Shopping, Theater, and
more!

Volunteer Orientation Day
HHDNYC hosts an Orientation Training Day Event
for new volunteers every three months.
Get trained by other volunteers. Get oriented about each Service Area and learn what would be expected from persons who commit for service.
• Volunteers will learn and talk about what it is like
to be blind
• Volunteers pair up in two to practice leading each other,
blindfolded, or how to help persons who are deaf
or confined to a wheelchair
• Volunteers develop a deeper understanding of how
unfamiliar, new places can feel scary to disabled people.
